Little Pigs For Sale

IMPORTANT NOTE: "Please, please don't buy pot belly pigs when there are rescue groups that have more pigs than homes. Check pigsaspets.org for more info and answers to questions... research, research before you get any pet!"
—posted by Judy (luvumpigs@yahoo.com)

Early to bed last night, a light rain outside and brain-fry inside—visions of environmentally-preferable products dancing through my noggin. Early to rise this morning, wondering how I've become this old.

Crisp early fall, the morning sun low, certain plants and trees deeply fragrant after the night's rain reminded me of the San Francisco waterfront as I walked to the bagel place for breakfast. I thought about the Dearest One, sculpting a wall in Ithaca. I thought about Jim, new dad. I thought about Kat, new mom. I thought about Salami, new house. I thought about the email I've owed Rodney for months. I wondered what's up with Jeremy. I thought that I should send my eye to Peggy, who I don't know but whose writing and heart I admire. I thought about the dedication and compassion of my new co-workers.

A fine morning.

Last month, driving to Ithaca in heavy fog, a sign suddenly appeared on the side of the road and then vanished just as quickly as I drove by. It was small, hand-lettered in crooked writing, and I would have sworn that it said, "Little pigs for sale." It didn't say baby pigs, or piglets, or miniature pigs. It said "little pigs," I was sure. I thought it was funny, and sort of mysterious.

Two weeks ago, driving to Ithaca as my mind wandered to those places it tends to go, that sign caught the corner of my eye, dragging my head around, my peripheral vision in its teeth. The weather was clear, the sky bright, but the glimpse fleeting. I was more sure than ever: "Little pigs for sale."

Last weekend, driving to Ithaca, I was ready. I kept my eyes peeled. And there it was. I stopped the truck on the shoulder and looked at it. It said, "Little pigs for sale."

Sometimes things really are just what they seem to be at first glance—but sometimes, that doesn't explain much.

Chitchat:

'I wondered what's up with Jeremy'

Jeremy got his ass fired on Wednesday, which, while inconvenient, did wonders for his mind, body and soul. His boss was (and is, I suppose) an insanely incommunicative passive-aggressive sort who decided, apparently arbitrarily, that he didn't much like Jeremy and set about to drive him from the company.

When Jeremy didn't go gracefully, he was fired. How 'bout that?

Other than that, I'm continuing with this fatherhood thing, looking for a new gig and pondering, much like yourself, how on earth I ever got this old.

You really should drop Rodney a line, you ask me.

Yesterday I caught myself dispensing some parenting advice followed with my standard disclaimer ('Of course, I'm not [whatever] myself...'), then I realized that I was, indeed, a parent.)

Hello I am looking for a pot belly piglet.I had a pot belly pig for 9 years and it died last summer of cancer i stayed up long hour when she was sick it was the worst thing ever i took Daisy (my pig)everywhere. I miss her a lot now i am looking for another piglet because they make such good pets and are so cute. If anyone is selling young piglets or knows anyone that is would you email me it means a lot Thanks!!!

~christina~  — February 13, 2005 02:39 PM

Pigs are NOT good housepets. They tear your house up, root up carpets, paneling, wallboard. They need to eat huge amounts; no good starving them to keep them "little & cute". Starving pigs are rambunctious pigs, and your home will suffer for it. They need warmth (not happy in winter), water to swim in (must keep cool in summer, or they get heat stroke), and tons of expensive vet care. Must be neutered. Very vicious, very fast & strong. Don't get a baby and then abandon it after a few months!

janaya  — July 25, 2005 02:39 AM

Please, please don't buy pot belly pigs when there are rescue groups that have more pigs than homes. Check pigsaspets.org for more info and answers to questions. Got 40 here no one wanted for many reasons but they all end up the same...research, research before you get any pet!
