Note the thickness of the lime finish on the top of the wall on the left side of the photo (versus the thickness on the vertical face). It's supposed that this thickness was detrimental to the drying regime.

The lime finish was well-bonded with the earth substrate. Also illustrated in the photo below.

| Lime is a soft material. The round "plugs" were produced by hitting the wall with a sledgehammer. It was easy to stab a small (one-inch diameter) blunt dowel into the wall through the lime and earth; however, it's not something that you could put your fist through without breaking bones. (Size, density and velocity matter.) |
